Frequently asked questions
I paid with a credit card but the balance didn't change. Is that a bug?
No, that's the correct behaviour. A credit card doesn't take the money at the moment of purchase: a month's purchases are collected into a statement and charged in one go the following month, on the statement day you set for that card.
The purchase still appears in the timeline on the day you made it — as an informational row — while the balance moves on the charge day. That's exactly what happens on the real account.
What is a credit card's "available" amount?
It's the remaining credit limit: your spending limit minus what you've already spent in the current calendar month. It isn't a balance, it's a counter against the limit — and it resets on the first of the month, regardless of the card's statement day.
How do I record topping up a prepaid card?
As a transfer. A prepaid card in BudgetScroll is an account of its own, because it holds money: topping it up is a transfer from your account (or from a credit card) to the prepaid card. If you top up with a credit card, the prepaid card is credited immediately while the charge on your account arrives with next month's statement.
Why do the timeline and the summary show different figures?
They answer two different questions. The timeline follows cash: when the money actually moves. The summary aggregates by accrual: the day the expense relates to. For a credit card purchase those two dates differ, and that's correct.
How do I change just one month of a recurring entry?
Open the occurrence you want and edit it: the app asks whether to apply the change to that occurrence only, or from there onwards to the whole series. The same goes for deletion — you can skip a single occurrence and leave the others untouched. Skipped occurrences can be found, and restored, under Settings → Recurring.
How do I change the app's language?
Under Settings → Language. You can pick one of the ten available languages, or "System language", which follows your iPhone's settings.
How do I back up my data?
Under Settings → Data you can export everything to a JSON file, choosing the date range. The file is human-readable and stays yours: keep it wherever you like and import it back later.
My data isn't showing up on my other device.
Syncing goes through iCloud: check that both devices are signed in to the same iCloud account and that iCloud Drive is on. The first sync isn't instant — it can take a few minutes and needs an internet connection. If the problem persists, get in touch.
How do I turn on the Face ID lock?
In Settings, by enabling the app lock. On launch you'll be asked for Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. If biometrics aren't available, iOS falls back to the passcode.
I erased everything by mistake. Can it be recovered?
Erasing is permanent and propagates to iCloud and your other devices, so the app can't undo it. The only safety net is an export made beforehand — which is why it's worth exporting from time to time.
Reporting a problem or suggesting an idea
Every report gets read. If you've found a case where the numbers don't add up, describe it with the concrete figures (amounts, dates, payment instrument): it's the fastest way to work out what's going on.
